See the entire discussion: Abortion.
Does stem cell research mean growing specific organs only? Or does it mean growing an entire person from whom to harvest organs? I've always wanted that clarified because I could definitely see people like the Christian Right objecting to the latter, but not really the former at all. It seems like a great idea, especially when so many people need transplants and can't get them. I'll point out again that I really don't know what I'm talking about, and may be discussing something completely different, but oh well.
Is anyone here very religious and opposed to stem cell research? I want to hear the argument against it. Peace,
Amanda
I believe that it is good to have stem cell research to help others. However, I am very much against cloning of humans.
I don't like stem cell research...I just find it weird for our government to be spending money on research that will sooner or later lead to the building of the "perfect" human.
To clarify: most of the current stem cell research has nothing to do with cloning human beings to a full fledged man. They are taking the stem cells from aborted fetuses or abundant fetuses at fertility clinics (they are going to be there anyway) and creating stem sells from adult cells and eggs to create an ebryo to a blastocyt stage (which is after a few days of conception). From there they are trying to specialize cells into different organs or tissues.
I had to write a paper about it so if you want to know more just ask. I know more than I wanted to know.
One neat genetics thing is that they can already pick some genetic traits. You might think of hair color or eye color but that is not what is being done. They have successfully suppressed the Alzeimers gene out of a baby born to a mother that knew the child would have it! More research on genetics (including stem cells) could lead to the discorvery of how to make people that won't get many other mental or physical problems that are given genetically.

Fetus stem cells are always going to be there due to aborted fetuses. So I have no problem using stem cell research as long as it not used to clone and the cells are not taken away from a baby parents want.

Dear board,
I'm all for Stem Cell research. When you look at the long-term promises of this research it completely out weighs the disadvantages. Think about the numerous possible treatments for Cancer, AIDS, or Diabetes that could be conjured up and developed from this research. Being born in a family where both of my grandparents died from Heart Disease/Diabetes makes me want Stem Research to even hurry at a faster pace.
I also agree with Locke, as long as it is not used for cloning then Stem Cell Research is ok. We must explore any and all possible ways to cure diseases that have plagued this world long enough even if it involves Human Fetal Tissue. The world wasn't built in a day and I don't expect for this research to all of sudden bring drastic cures and treatments for every disease, but I hope and pray that one day Stem Cell Research will at least provide some comfort to families who suffer from passed down family illnesses.
See ya,
Josh
