[demo] In watching the media cover the events and the aftermath of the attcks, I couldn't help but notice some of the language that was being fed to us, how do you think the media has shaped americans point of view on the attacks and of the people involved (i.e. Bush etc.)

[demo] What I think the media is trying to do is to cause some type of reaction, good or bad.I also think what the media has done, is to make us have a common enemy.
If you were watching t.v, one of the things the media showed was a clippage of people (I think it was Palestinians) celebrating our loss, but what I heard was that it was an old film pulled out from before. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, you can't trust everything you see or are told about.

[demo] An event such as 9.11 is one that would unite people and bring a new sense of nationalism to a nation. That is inevitable. The media is one of the institutions that contributes the most to these new feelings and ideas. After 9.11 many tuned into the many different media channels covering these incidents. From the New York Times to Al Jazeera people turned to media for answers and information. Unfortunately some, if not all, media covered the event the way they thought would fit the overall mood of the nation. They used titles such as "America Under Attack", or "War Alert" to draw attention and make a point. Yet some others decided to make some programs about Islam. Even some of those programs the titles were questionable. I remeber one that had a title as such: "The True Face of Islam." Yet with all the different shortcomings from the various media outputs, I think it did a fairly OK. job concerning the circumstances.

[demo] I really don't know how i feel about the media's coverage of the 9.11 events. i'm very skeptical of this new found nationalism and i'm not about to buy into it. i understand the need for people to feel united and safe- but i'm not sure if the media's tactics are the most appropriate. i mean now sometimes when you go to the movies there will be this 5 minute advertisement for patriotism- that's weird to me. an ad for patriotism- i mean, come on. america has done some really horrible things that i'm not too proud of and all that doesn't go away just because we are in a time of turmoil. in general i think we should be very critical of what the media feeds us- especially now when their messages are so overwhelmingly one sided.

[demo] The media is giving a very biased point of view not lookn at both sides. Before 9/11 there were all these news reports on how people thought that the American government was corrupted, now everyone is suddenly saying how we have a great nation and how the politicians are doing such a great job. The media also has not been doing a great job in making the Muslims feel safe. For awhile Muslims where afraid to get out of the house and do normal activities due to the media's news coverage on how many people were attacking innocent Muslims.

[demo] what i remember most from the media coverage right after the attacks was how obvious it suddenly was that the "media" isn't a thing -- it's made out of human beings. in a lot of ways the reporters and newscasters were just as clueless as the rest of us, trying to make sense of things, do their jobs well, and not fall to pieces onscreen. it was a good reminder that the media isn't god, isn't a force for evil (we hope!), and is subject to the same flaws we all are.

[demo] I am not sure that its the role of the media to make Muslims feel safe. The violence against the Muslim community, and similar events, in my opinion, need to be covered. If reporters had knowledge of attacks against Muslims, and didn't report them, then a number of problems would arise. The media might be considered biased against the Muslim community. Or people would be unaware of the kind of violence that is happening in our own country. This type of violence needs to be exposed, not ignored. But maybe you are talking about how the media reported these stories, and not simply the amount of coverage it provided. Unfourtunately, I didn't pay a great deal of attention to the tone of the media's coverage.

[demo] During and after the 9/11 attacks, I agree with what has been said before about there being actual people representing the media. In many cases, we see media as a big entity that distorts and sell information for the goal of personal or economical gain. I have come to a realization that the reporter were under pressure to report information that was absolutely correct. During that time of unrest, there was no room for mistakes. Although, I do believe that U.S. media could of done a better job of covering Muslim people. I remember during the week of 9/11 - one news station aired a shot of children laughing and singing, expressing what the views that were passed down to them by there parents. Of course, that shot was not taken very well by many Americans. That news station later had to retract that shot because that shot was taken approx. 6 months before the terrorist attacks.
In my opinion, the media has grown a lot in being responsible for what it puts out because of what happened on 9/11.

[demo] Yeah, i agree with both of you, SmoothCriminal and ncutaia. sure, i think the media coulda done a better job, but of course, we want them always to be objective and fair and reporting all the facts and just the facts. esp. in a messy situation like 9.11, it's hard to say what they are. we should ALWAYS think critically about the media... and if we think they're doing a crappy job, think up ways to get better info out.
sort of on another note, i remember the first couple of days when reports would come out and then you'd never hear about them again, like a missing fifth plane and a truckload of explosives confiscated at the George Washington Bridge... does anyone else remember that stuff?

[demo] Yeah, i totally remember all these crazy stories, like the one about explosives under the george washington bridge, people were really starting to believe it- i was even starting to beleive it. we/i trust the media to a certain extent. i know for myself that there's a place in my mind that says, why would they lie? how could they lie? this is the news, they're not allowed to do that. and that may be naive of me, but on some kind of basic level- we should be able to trust our media- composed of our peoples. maybe i'm wrong. life lesson #348526.
