Hi,

What do you guys think Andrea Yates' sentence should be? I believe that she should have a life-sentence in jail because 1. I am against the death penalty, and 2. I believe that she definitely has some psychological problems even though she was not convicted as being insane.

Yeah I think she has some issues to deal with before she dies. I think her husband should get something though. She never should been having children.

I understand her, i alos have a desiese, but i have never murdered a person. i think she needs to get help. i wan't to say she should die, but if she truly did not know what she was doing then you can not killl her. I think that they should go after the people who let her out of the mental institution that she was in.

I agree with heddie, the drs and other people need to take some responsibility

BrooklynGirl  08:38pm Mar 18, 2002 EST 5 of 16
Life in jail with psychiatric help should be her punishment.

brassylass  10:34pm Mar 18, 2002 EST 6 of 16
It is her punishment. My family was sure she was as good as dead.

Death would have been nice... but then again I love the death penalty... Ah well, let's all hope our parents don't us as a cry out for help...

lock,
i agree with the death penalty too, would you put a ten year old in the electric chair cause he killed somebody, i do not think you would, he did not know what he was doing, neither did she. Take it form someone who has a mental desiese, you have times when your not with it. it's kinda like a outerbody expierience. i am not saying what she did was right but can you kill her for not knowing what she was doing?

Locke  02:03pm Mar 19, 2002 EST 9 of 16
Heddie8383,

Yes, she may not have known what she waz doing, but I feel that she still needs the death penalty.

The best example I can give of this is a wild bear. A bear goes out and mauls some kid, what do we do with the bear? It gets killed, not put in some sanctuary. The bear is considered a menace to society and in my mind killers are a menace also.

I don't care if she didn't know what she waz doing, she still did it. I have seen what having a mental disease is like. I have a friend that has 2 handicapped brothers. They treat those kids just like average kids and punish them like wise. How else will they learn that hitting someone is bad, or that stealing candy from a store is wrong?

Yates did something wrong and needs to pay the price for it. In my mind going to a cooshy jail with cable tv and therapists isn't valid punishment. Hell, I wouldn't mind that punishment.

The death penalty is not paying the price. I am not against the death penalty for moral reasons but rather because it is not enough. I believe that it is an easy out for people, and murderers should be in jail for life, without parole.

Locke  03:59pm Mar 19, 2002 EST 11 of 16
Meggem15,

yeah, send them to jail for life to associate with other career criminals, sit in a cooshy jail, watch tv, and work out on excersise machines without having to play for club memberships. Right... that's a real punishment... Makes me wanna go out and kill someone right now to get in.

Please, death the easy way out... How come so many criminals appeal the court to not be put to death...?

I don't really like the death penalty for the simple fact that if somebody is killed for killing somebody, it's a little on the hypocritical side. You're telling them it's wrong, but then you go and do it. I like the idea of life in prison...but I'd like it even more if they put these people in cells with pics of those they killed. That's cruel and unusual punishment, though so it will never happen.
When dealing with insanity, life in a mental place is the best place for them. I mean, I don't think it would be fair to put a person without all sound mind and body in a prison with "regular" prisoners. The insane person may be harmed by others because they don't have the sense to protect themselves or they may hurt others because they don't know it's wrong. At a mental ward, they may be able to get some help and learn to understand the horrible thing(s) they did that got them there.

Again, I'm not a big fan of the death penalty.

brassylass  10:02pm Mar 19, 2002 EST 13 of 16
umm...locke, they should be punished to show what is bad and to learn in an institution that will help. If she was killed she would learn nothing for the fact she would be dead.

And jail isnt all fun and games. It is confinement and goes against all human social behavior nad is punishment. We watched many videos on it in government. For murderers they tend to send them to the more confined areas too. I mean I go crazy sitting in a class for an hour or two. They should have to pay back to the community for what they did in different kinds of jobs. THe lady clearly ahd problems.

zion613  11:01pm Mar 19, 2002 EST 14 of 16
Personally, I am a big fan of the death penalty. If a person murders another person, killing him (note the difference between "murder" and "kill" here) is the only just punishment. If someone takes the life of another, his own life is forfeit.

Of course, if it was an accident (they do happen), death is not necessarily deserved. Also, there should be ample evidence that murder is, beyond the shadow of a doubt, what the guy did before the death penalty is given.

As to Yates, I think the death penalty should not necessarily apply to insane people, but they should be sentenced to life in prison without parole if they can not be or do not want to be helped.

lock,
the thing with the bear, that is not the way it should happen, it should be put in a sanctuary. it would not happen but that is what should be done. a animal's wild instinct tell it to rid it's self of it's threat. a human is a threat. Andrea Yates had some mental deseise, in her mind it was all right to kill them kids, yes we know that it was horrible, but that is what she thaught, just like the bear thaught that the child was a threat, we know that that a child is not a threat but the bear only sees a human not an innocent child. I am fighting and have been for years to help put bears that are a nuisance to society in sanctuaries.

Locke,

If I was in charge believe me - the inmates would not have all the luxuries they have now a days. In fact, they would have none, and they will be put to work.
