[Note: Veganjoy asked in the previously longer Thread title: "Have you became more involved in things in your community since 9/11, and if so what sorts of differences do you see?"]
Yes I have,
For example, this forum right here. Usually I wouldn't have participated in this, but after 9/11, I've learned to appreciate the company of people more, since many souls were lost on that day. I participated in Found Raisers for in school which would help the families which were greatly affected my 9/11, and if I'm really honest, I wouldn't have spent time on these things if it were not for 9/11. Currently, I am trying to get this discussion group published in the school's newspaper, so more ppl could participate and share their expreiences after 9/11, especially since we go to Stuy, which is extremely close to the WTC. I hope I get it done. That's about it.
Oh yeah, and a very interesting thing I saw this morning when I was coming to school, they were transporting the Golden Globe that was in the pool in front of the two towers away on a truck. We students stopped and all watched it go down the street.

YES THERE IS MORE HELPING EACH OTHER OUT OR WELL WAS NOW EVERYTHING IS GOING BACK TO ABOUT LIKE IT WAS. TRAGEDY STRIKES WE GRIEVE THEN WE MOVE ON ITS NATURE BUT THERE ARE SOME WHO WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO MOVE ON. DOWN HERE IT DIDNT REALLY EFFECT THAT MUCH BUT OUR SENCE OF SECURITY BUT NOW ITS ABOUT THE SAME AS IT WAS BEFORE. BUT NOT TO SAY I KNOW HOW PEOPLE FELT AND I NEVER WILL IT WAS A GREAT LOSS AND STILL IS BUT THAT DAY MY MOM WAS IN CHICAGO AND I KNEW THEY WERE GOING TO THE SEARS TOWER AND THEY POSTED THE THREAT TO THERE I ABOUT WENT CRAZY AND THE SCHOOL WOULD NOT LET ME CALL MY GRANNY TO TELL HER TO CALL MY MOM TO MAKE SURE SHE WAS NOT THERE AND WAS COMING HOME. THAT WAS THE WORST DAY IN MY LIFE AND I KNOW THOSE OF MANY OTHERS. BUT LIKE I SAID DEATH STRIKES WE MOVE ON LIKE HERE WELL EVERYBODY KNOWS EVERYBODY ELSE ITS A FACT HERE AND WE HAVE HAD THREE PEOPLE DIE HERE ONE 13 ONE 16 AND ONE 17 ALL AT DIFF TIMES BUT WITHIN FOUR MONTHS OF EACH OTHER ITS AWFUL BUT MOSTLY WE HAVE MOVED ON YES THEIR SPIRITS WILL LIVE WITH US FOREVER AND THEY TAUGHT US LESSONS THAT WE ALL NEEDED TO KNOW. BUT ANYWAYS IM OUTTIE ~~~~~AMBER~~~~~

I can say that I haven't been more involved with the community, but 9/11 has made more interested in world affairs. Before 9/11 all I would bother reading up on in the news is local stuff. I used to not give a rats ass about backwards countries and their civil wars. 9/11 has taught me to be more compassionate towards all of human kind.
...punch and pie
I actually had a very different reaction from locke. I've always been very interested in world affairs but since 9/11 I feel like I can't really take it anymore. I cringe whenever I see the cover of the New York Times and whenever I hear the news coming on, and I try to avoid them as best I can. I lost my brother-in-law on 9/11 and my whole family was kind of in a stupefied shock for a while after. I kind of plunged into a constant feeling of waiting to die, thinking that suddenly everything was going to be drastically different, almost like it is in Israel, things blowing up everyday everywhere. I figured that I would probably die in a few days so I should stop talking to my friends and doing homework and, well, living. But I'm still alive and so I can't really spend my time just waiting until I'm not. So I have to avoid the newspapers because I have to pretend it's not really happening. I've found that its the only way I can deal with it.
I have been reaching out more, especially soon after it happened, I volunteered for the red cross and salvation army, gave blood, went to vigils, and did basically all the stuff that all new yorkers did. It was nice to have that brief grace period where everyone in the city was really kind to everyone, but its pretty much back to normal now I'd say. I hope to remain in the spirit of helping people but I'm sure that after a while I will become lazy and apathetic again, until the next attack I guess.

Actually the people in my community have been less involved. The community has become more segregated... it's really pathetic. They also took prayer out of our school. The most involved thing people do out here is raise the American flag. Other than that nothing goes on.

I am not sure if my community has been more involved but I do think that my school is getting more involved. We just started a "Free the Children" group and we are fundraising money and volunteering time to help children in countries around the world. Although this is a small step I think that it is an important one, and will hopefully lead to many others just like it.

I think people need to pray around
the world and help the people to get some money and support from each other. I am still in shock about this....... I think you can talk about it. It will help people to get over the sadness.
my community hasn't really had more involvement. That is if you call our town a community, actually we are so small we are called a village not a town. WE are all spread so far apart its hard to get all together.
And about the news and current events. I think that the media needs to stop dwelling on all of the negative things. Telling about them and giving updates is one thing, but it is very depressing to see images of people dieing and being hurt over and over again. THere is more bad news apposed to good news and it has always been that way.
happie, i can not begin to imagine what you feel like and I do hope that things get better for you. To move on is to start over without that person and I know that hurts (we have had some bad luck with family members dieing in that last few years). I hope that it gets easier for you and your family, and all the other families that were affected.
Dear board,
I myself has taken action to involve myself in my community. I started an oraganization called the Rock of Hope Foundation. Myself and others will be visiting Leukemia patients in hospitals bringing them toys and a painted rock symbolizing hope and peace. I'm so excited to do this, I had a friend online who had Leukemia, and we chatted everyday. He thought that I wouldn't chat with him because he had Leukemia. He was 12. I felt so sorry for him. Everyday he'd e-mail me what he went through for the day, whethere it was Chemo Therepy or Enemas. The last time I heard from him was last year and he told me he was in Remission and I haven't heard from him since. But I told him that I will devote my life to helping promote Leukemia awareness and I feel like by starting this organzation I'm doing just that.
See ya,
Josh
that is so cool josh. I am trying to add more time to my service to look good on college aplications adn because i want to but I dont know where to start. have any ideas that will help?
Dear Brassylass,
There are many things you can do. Do what I'm doing!! Hospitals love it when other kids come to visit patients and so do the kids. You could also volunteer at a local soup kitchen or be a counselor at a camp or youth center, all of which are fun and give you a chance to interact with other kids. You should also ask your school guidance counselor. Usually they have plenty of oppurtunities for volunteerism.
See ya,
Josh
Thanks for the advice! i wish my hospital would let people volunteer but they dont.
